Whereas in most systems the database is the first-class citizen and a language is added on top, under M this is inverted, the language itself is the primary object, the database a "side effect" of one of the features of the language. M contrasts strongly with most database systems, because the system is much "lower level". For instance, whereas most database systems will include a command to find all the records matching a particular pattern, on an M system you would have to write a program to do this search and collect up the results. As you might imagine, this makes even trivial tasks much more difficult, and has led to a number of M-based programs to act as a database management system and provide these features.

Programming In M Resources The MUMPS programming language, also known as M, was specifically designed for use in healthcare and has a long history. It is the basis for the Veterans http://www.linuxmednews.com/1042396954/index_html
Extractions: The MUMPS programming language, also known as M, was specifically designed for use in healthcare and has a long history. It is the basis for the Veterans Administration VistA software as well as many other commercial healthcare applications. Because of its unique properties, it is used in banking as well. Open source bindings to CORBA exist (see below) and a complete open source M compiler, GT.M, is available on Sourceforge . There is much activity surrounding M in healthcare, perhaps more now that there is a Free/Open Source M compiler available. Read on for links to books and resources for programming in M The hardhats maintain a comprehensive web page of M links here . Thanks to Chuck Link for the pointer to this. KS Bhaskar, recent recipient of the 2002 Linux Medical News Software achievement award writes: 'A good book for M programming is: Walters, Richard F. M Programming: A Comprehensive Guide. Digital Press, 1997. ISBN: 1555581676. In the US, Amazon lists it for $39.95 and claims to be able to ship it in 24 hours. An advanced online reference is Ed de Moel's MUMPS By Example
GPL MUMPS/SQL Medical Record Project Linuxprogramming is reporting the availability of a GPL ed MUMPS compiler. I used to do a fair amount of Mumps programming w/ Intersystems Cache. http://www.linuxmednews.com/994609042/index_html
Extractions: LinuxProgramming is reporting the availability of a GPL'ed MUMPS compiler. What's old is new as LinuxMedNews reported on this significant development 8 months ago. What LinuxProgramming does not pick up is that Dr. O'Kane now has a page describing a fully open source medical record project based on MUMPS and SQL. A good one. The "data collection application" looks very much like OIO 's "forms". I think it would be great to move OIO's web-forms editing and rendering modules to the Gnu Medical Record system. Since both systems use SQL + PostgreSQL in the backend and both are under GPL, maybe the MUMPS engine will be able do things that OIO's Zope/ Python engine cannot do. Very exciting!

MUMPS is similar to other procedural languages developed in this period, such as BASIC FORTRAN , and C . A MUMPS standard was approved by ANSI in 1977. Although MUMPS has never achieved the popularity level of other languages such as C and BASIC, there is still an active community of MUMPS developers. Since about 1993, there has been a growing trend to change the name from MUMPS to M or M-Technology.
